Several years ago, former American Idol competitor Sanjaya Malakar provided the entertainment at Rachel Lader’s bat mitzvah. Sanjaya entertained everyone in Oheka Castle and was asked to read from the Torah. As planned, he serenaded the celebrator with “Isn’t She Lovely,” a song popularized by Stevie Wonder. Sanjaya performed the song as the young woman had her first dance with her father. Sanjaya said it his first time performing in a bat mitzvah, and he loved the experience. Other popular figures who were invited to the bat mitzvah included football superstars Brandon Jacobs and Osi Umenyiora of the New York Giants and singers Ashford and Simpson.

Rachel Lader is attending New York Law School, where she is a juris doctor candidate. In 2013, Rachel Lader worked with Anthony Kennedy Shriver, the founder and leader of Best Buddies International.
An organization dedicated to the inclusion and representation of children and adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD), Best Buddies International operates in all 50 states. Its Friendship Program is one of the most comprehensive of its kind in the nation. The Friendship Program is divided into five categories, each catering to a different demographic. The categories are middle schools, high schools, colleges, citizens, and e-Buddies. Each provides one-on-one contact between a volunteer and an individual with IDD. In addition to education, volunteers help persons with IDD overcome emotional and social challenges and barriers and provide support and companionship. The program aims to improve the quality of life of individuals with IDD and increase their involvement in the community. An aspiring lawyer splitting her time between law school and an internship at Hach & Rose, LLP, Rachel Lader worked directly with Anthony Kennedy Shriver and his mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, as a campaign organizer. In this capacity, Rachel Lader was responsible for marketing the Best Buddies nonprofit organization and promoting its goals.
Similar to a for-profit business, a nonprofit must raise awareness about its organization and mission. Here are several methods of boosting public awareness of nonprofits and increasing both fundraising and volunteer recruitment efforts: Share on Social Media Considering that close to three billion people use social media every day, posting regular stories and content to social media is a great way of spreading awareness. By maintaining an active feed, nonprofits are able to share news relating to their work with followers and engage with individuals more easily. Give Out Freebies People love getting free items, and nonprofits can easily spread their names and logos by giving out small branding items to people. In fact, reports show that nearly 90 percent of consumers remember the branding on a product they received within 2 years. These items can be simple, like pens and mugs, or even stickers that people can put on their water bottles. Organize a Live Event Hosting a social event, such as a picnic or scavenger hunt, is a great way of spreading public awareness in a no-pressure atmosphere. However, the event must align with the organization’s mission. During these events, nonprofits should take plenty of pictures and videos for their social media channels and websites. Rachel Lader works at Hach & Rose, LLP, where she serves as a legal intern as she pursues a degree at New York Law School. As a law student and legal intern, Rachel Lader follows current events and the political happenings in our country.
A Pew Research Center study showed that over the past 20 years, public knowledge of current events has changed little, despite the technological and informational revolution. While the Internet has successfully connected people around the world, this study concluded that people have been disconnected from occurrences around the world. Current events encompass news and information about politics, business, money, sports, crime, employment, education, ethics, anything that happens every day. Staying up-to-date with current events has some valuable benefits. First, following current events increases a person’s knowledge. It provides a broad understanding of local, national, or worldwide affairs. It provides awareness of the world beyond and better prepares people for what can possibly come. Second, being aware of current events allows a person to engage in meaningful conversations and enables them to form their own opinions. It sparks engaging discussions and debates. It allows people to share their thoughts about a particular topic, which in turn allows them to appreciate other views and perspectives about the issue. Third, staying up-to-date with current events helps a person make important decisions. It provides a basis for decisions such as how to engage in the community, which candidate to vote for, where best to put up a business, or which school has better academic offerings. A law student at New York Law School, Rachel Lader serves as a legal intern at Hach & Rose, LLP. From the ages of 13-16, Rachel Lader played on a nationally-ranked soccer team in the United States.
The US women’s soccer team's win during the World Cup 2015 and 2019 seems to be driving enrollment in youth soccer leagues across the nation. The US women's soccer team is scheduled to play against the Netherland Sunday in Lyon, France. With another win, the team hopes to achieve its fourth world championship since 1991. Inspired by their idols, more girls are turning into soccer fans, eager to learn by copying their movements, practicing more, and even collecting information about the US women's soccer team. A coach with the Downtown United Soccer Club credited the 2015 World Cup win with filling their club to capacity. If the trend holds, the same will happen again following this year’s win. |
